"My favorite Link tool is the Palm Wrench. I can get into anywhere with it and I don't have to squeeze my fingers. The Link u-joint keeps me working. I don't have to worry about losing the universal socket when I'm in a tight spot. I have lots of tools but now that I have Link I use them all the time because they make it easier to get into places and get the work done."

Don’t Lose Another Socket in Your Mower
LINK Tools locks everything in place while you work
By Marcia Passos Duffy, Turf Central, November, 2003

Tim Johnson never wastes any time looking for lost sockets inside the movers he uses at the Royal Fox Country Club in St. Charles, Ill., where he works as an equipment technician. It’s not that he’s just good at not dropping sockets or extenders, but he has the help of a unique tool system that locks extensions and sockets to the ratchet – and won’t come apart until Johnson pulls a ring to take them apart.

“In turf equipment, there’s a lot of places to reach down, and nine times out of 10, you’ll lose a socket or extension that falls into the machine,” Johnson says.

Johnson, who is also president of the Turf Equipment Technicians Association, uses LINK Tools, an innovative set of tools with a “no dropped sockets” guarantee, which results in increased efficiency, as well as less damage to machinery. LINK Tools in the first tool kit to feature an automatic locking system that instantly locks every component of a socket wrench – functioning like a solid tool from hand to work - while still allowing easy, one-handed quick release.

The system has been cited as “outstanding” by Popular Mechanics, Sailing, This Old House and AAA Motorist, and is the first tool kit to receive a “Q-Mark” rating for quality and ergonomics from TUV Rheinland, one of Europe’s top approval organizations. The LINK Tools system has been used by companies such as American Airlines, Amtrak and NASA.

What’s different about the LINK system? “Plain and simple,” says Don Garlits, auto racing Hall of Famer who has endorsed the product, “when you attach the extensions and sockets to the ratchet, you can’t take them apart unless you want to. When you’re working in tight places, inevitably you’re going to bump into something and knock the socket off. These tools are different. You have to pull up a ring to take them apart. So you can’t accidentally drop it into the frame or into the wheels or somewhere else where you can’t find it.” As with turf machinery, it is not unusual for an auto mechanic to spend 20 minutes looking into every crevice for a lost socket, Garlits says. “These tools save a lot of stress, because it’s always in the back of you mind, ‘what if I drop this socket?’”

The secret to the LINK Tools system is its locking pin, says Ted Weldon, vice president of marketing for the Chicago-based LINK Tools International. “Other tools (extensions) have ball bearings, which are the largest offender of accidentally disconnected and dropped tools,” notes Weldon. LINK Tools uses a pin – instead of a ball bearing – to lock the tools in place, which makes it impossible to fall apart, unless the user releases the lock.

Another feature of the LINK Tool system is that it locks into all quality brand sockets or socket-mounted bits, allowing users to utilize their existing sockets, as long as sockets have detents (small dimples inside the sockets), which most sockets have. (However, some ¼-inch do not, so Weldon suggests users check sockets first.) “If you don’t have detents, you can buy our sockets or sockets from another manufacturer that does have the detents – this is necessary in order for our pin system to work in locking everything together.”

“If I didn’t already have 23 years worth of tools, I would buy every kit they have,” says Tim Johnson, who owns a LINK Tools ¼-inch drive set. “It goes without saying, I’m a big fan.”

The Link Tool system is sold exclusively through the company’s Web site at www.link-tools.com or by calling their toll-free order line 1-888-433-4234.
Every LINK Tool is designed and engineered to the highest quality standards, significantly exceeding all U.S. Government and ANSI strength specifications.
